The race for an English wonderkid is hotting up: Chris Rigg, AFC Sunderland’s big talent, is not only captivating Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, but is also on FC Bayern Munich’s watch list.
FC Bayern’s interest in Chris Rigg was already reported at the beginning of the year. The centre midfielder, who regularly features in Sunderland’s starting line-up, has already put in some impressive performances in the Championship at the age of just 16. With two goals in 21 games, he has established himself as the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history.
According to the English newspaper The Sun, however, it is not just Munich who are putting out feelers for Rigg. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be showing serious interest. Both clubs are known for their successful promotion of young talent, which could give them a potential advantage in this competition. In Munich, on the other hand, the young Englishman would be up against established stars.
Bayern move seems unlikely
Rigg’s contract at Sunderland, a training contract, is still valid until the summer of 2025. Should a transfer take place, only a small transfer fee would be due. This makes him an even more attractive target for top clubs looking for an inexpensive but highly talented player.

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, Rigg’s advisors see his future in an environment where he can gain consistent match practice rather than at a top European club where he may be stuck in a youth team. A transfer to FC Bayern therefore seems unlikely at the moment – unless sporting director Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund can show him a clear plan and prospects in Munich.
