In the 2-2 draw against Real Madrid, Bayern are missing Matthijs de Ligt, an important pillar of their defence. His return is eagerly awaited after Minjae Kim’s slip-ups. He himself spoke about the current situation after the game.
Matthijs de Ligt was sorely missed by FC Bayern in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Real Madrid. The Dutchman suffered an inner ligament injury against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga last Saturday and was unavailable for the first clash with the Whites.
Minjae Kim deputised for him in Bayern’s central defence and was partly responsible for both goals conceded.
The South Korean simply hasn’t found his form in the second half of the season. This makes it all the more important that De Ligt is available for the second leg at the Bernabeu on 8 May, when FCB will be competing for a place in the Champions League final.
Race against time for De Ligt
But that is questionable at the moment. „We’ll have to see and wait. We’ll see from day to day,“ he was quoted as saying by the Munich evening newspaper after the game on Tuesday evening.
De Ligt was already out for several weeks in the first half of the season with an inner ligament injury. In any case, he had a difficult time with coach Thomas Tuchel before the winter break.
That has since changed. The Dutchman has established himself in the back four and even scored a goal in the round of 16 second leg against Lazio Roma (3:0).
Whether he will get another chance to shine for Bayern in the premier class this season remains to be seen in the coming days. According to kicker, however, there is a good chance that De Ligt will be available in Madrid next week. Internally, Munich are assuming that he will be able to play.
