FC Bayern would like to finalise the signing of Ralf Rangnick as quickly as possible. The problem: the 65-year-old has not yet given the Munich club a final commitment. As has now become known, Rangnick has doubts as to whether he should actually accept the coaching job at the German record champions.
The ÖFB and Ralf Rangnick himself have confirmed this week that there have been concrete talks between him and Bayern. Several media outlets have also reported that the 65-year-old has had an offer ready to sign since Wednesday evening. However, Rangnick is keeping Bayern on tenterhooks and has not yet made a decision on whether he is ready to take over from Thomas Tuchel in the summer.
As SPORT1 chief reporter Stefan Kumberger reveals in the podcast „Die Bayern-Woche“, Rangnick is not 100 per cent convinced of a commitment to the German record champions: „He is very critical of the current situation and squad at FC Bayern. He’s not cheering and saying „finally I can coach Bayern“. He knows that there is a lot to do, especially when it comes to the squad,“ the Bayern insider revealed.
Staying in the ÖFB is still possible
Even though FC Bayern is one of the absolute top clubs in Europe, Rangnick is hesitant to take on this new challenge: „Perhaps Ralf Rangnick will thank Bayern for their interest and say: ‚I’m staying in Austria‘. It is rumoured that Rangnick would like to become Bayern coach, but it may well be that he decides against Bayern and remains coach of Austria,“ says Kumberger.
According to Kumberger, Rangnick is being celebrated as a national hero in Austria following the successful qualification for the European Championship. In addition to the excellent work-life balance as national team coach, Rangnick also has a contract with the ÖFB until 2026 and two attractive sporting goals ahead of him with the European Championship and World Cup. The German newspaper tz also reports that Rangnick is giving a lot of thought to whether he wants to completely change his life for FC Bayern at the age of 66.
It will be interesting to see how long Rangnick wants to take before announcing his decision. Should he commit to Bayern, negotiations between FCB and the ÖFB are still pending. These could also turn out to be a stumbling block. According to reports, the Austrian association is demanding a transfer fee of up to 15 million euros for Rangnick.
