In Max Eberl, Bayern have apparently now found their dream sports director. Former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge reveals: „They wanted to bring him to the German record champions before.
Former Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed that Munich would have liked to have brought Max Eberl to the club in a position of responsibility at an earlier stage. He also refuted the rumour that Uli Hoeneß had wanted Eberl as his successor, but that Rummenigge had been opposed to the appointment at the time.
„That’s simply not true,“ Rummenigge clarified on t-online: „It’s well known that Uli and Max are close friends. But I’ve known Max for just as long as Uli. And incidentally, we already wanted to bring him to FC Bayern when I was still CEO.“
Rummenigge reported on a conversation with the people in charge at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Eberl was head of sport at the time: „Jan Dreesen and I had a conversation with Mr Königs and Mr Schippers (Gladbach’s former president and managing director; editor’s note). Unfortunately, Borussia Mönchengladbach didn’t give him the go-ahead. Otherwise Max would have been with us before then.“
Rummenigge raves about Eberl
In 2017 in particular, Max Eberl was seen as a possible new sporting director at FC Bayern, but in the end Hasan Salihamidzic was appointed sporting director.
Rummenigge is delighted that it has now worked out with Eberl: „We are all happy that Max Eberl is now at FC Bayern. With him, we are now in a top position on the board: with Jan Dreesen (CEO; editor’s note), Michael Diederich (CFO; editor’s note) and him. In various roles that you simply need to work together,“ said the 68-year-old.
He went on to enthuse: „Max will undoubtedly play a very important role now, but also in the future. Accordingly, he was the piece of the mosaic that we wanted.“
