Xabi Alonso remains FC Bayern’s favourite candidate for the coaching position. The Munich management are apparently making progress with the Spanish coach from Bayer Leverkusen. Talks are already underway and Alonso is leaning towards FCB.
FC Bayern is apparently making progress in its bid for the coach of choice, Xabi Alonso. According to Sky, Alonso knows that Bayern want him. Talks have already taken place. According to the report, Bayern have made inquiries – not only with the Spaniard’s management, but also with Alonso himself.
According to the report, Bayern’s cautious confidence is based on the information they have: If Alonso leaves his current club Bayer Leverkusen, he will tend towards Bayern and not Liverpool FC.
Background: Alonso believes that the legacy of Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool is a difficult one. There is more to lose than to gain. Klopp will leave the club after nine years at Liverpool as an absolute club legend.
Alonso would be expensive
However, according to Sky, Alonso would become one of the most expensive coaches of all time if he were to leave. According to the report, Alonso does not have a release clause that would take effect next summer. His transfer fee could then be between 15 and 20 million euros.
But: Alonso is on course to become Bundesliga champion with Leverkusen, is in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup with the Werkself and in the round of 16 of the Europa League. Should he win one or even several titles, Leverkusen would not put any obstacles in his way, according to Sky.
Alonso does not have an exit clause in his contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2025. Cost then: 15 million euros.
Bayern will not have that much patience in their search for a new coach, however, as current FCB coach Thomas Tuchel will have to step down at the end of the current season.
