FC Bayern suddenly has a chance to take the lead in the Bundesliga standings! Borussia Dortmund dropped points for the first time this season on Matchday 5. Despite holding a 2-0 lead at one point, BVB could not manage more than a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen. This means that with a win at FC Augsburg, Munich can overtake the current league leader.
Of all people, it was a former Dortmund player who dealt the Black and Yellows a late setback. Niclas Füllkrug scored the equalizer for Werder Bremen in the second minute of stoppage time, handing his former club its first loss of points in the current Bundesliga season.
For a long time, it had looked like Dortmund would secure their fifth win in five games. After a scoreless first half, BVB put themselves on the path to victory with two goals. But Bremen refused to give up and fought their way back into the game.
Füllkrug shocks Dortmund in stoppage time
It was particularly bitter for Niko Kovac’s team: The equalizer didn’t come until just before the final whistle. Füllkrug scored in the 90th+2 minute to make it 2–2, dashing Dortmund’s hopes of another three points.
This brings BVB’s perfect record to an end for now. After four wins to start the season, the Black and Yellows have to settle for a draw for the first time.
For FC Bayern, however, the result from Dortmund is excellent news. After four matchdays, the Munich side has ten points and is currently three points behind the league leader.
With the draw, Dortmund now has 13 points. With an away win against Augsburg, the record champions would also reach the 13-point mark.
Bayern can overtake Dortmund with a win against Augsburg

In this scenario, goal difference would be the deciding factor. Here, the Munich team already holds a clear advantage over BVB.
While Dortmund has a goal differential of +7 following the draw against Bremen, FC Bayern stands at +12. A win in Augsburg would extend that lead even further.
So it’s clear: If Vincent Kompany’s team wins the derby at FCA, they’ll take the lead in the standings.
However, the task is likely to be anything but easy. Augsburg has proven to be a tough opponent on several occasions in recent years. Last season, FCA even handed Bayern their only Bundesliga loss.
Before the match, Kompany therefore explicitly warned about Augsburg’s quality and emphasized that his team must not underestimate the opponent under any circumstances.
Following BVB’s surprising loss of points, the record champions’ motivation has certainly risen even further. Bayern now have it in their own hands to jump to the top of the standings for the first time this season.
