At FC Bayern, they don’t want to leave anything to chance when it comes to squad planning for the upcoming season. That’s why they’re addressing potential areas of concern early on. One of these is the goalkeeper position.
Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich are expected to retire. Both will then make way for new players. The question, however, is who will fill those spots. Jonas Urbig is set to be the starting goalkeeper, but a backup is needed.
Finn Dahmen of FC Augsburg is a serious candidate for FC Bayern, but he’s not the only goalkeeper being considered. Bernd Leno is also on Munich’s radar.
Leno opens the door to a move to Bayern
BILD reported that the former national team goalkeeper, who currently plays for Fulham FC and whose contract runs only until the summer of 2027, is also highly regarded internally.
Now the tz is following up with a report that the experienced goalkeeper is open to a move and would at least consider a potential offer from Bayern.
Just recently, Leno praised the record champions in an interview, saying: “Bayern is one of the top clubs in the world—you have to say that—and, of course, by far the best club in Germany.”
A move for Leno would have one advantage: he’d be much closer to his home and his family. After many years in England, a return to Germany could therefore make sense for several reasons.
Especially since life as a backup goalkeeper at FC Bayern isn’t so bad either. You’re practically guaranteed a title, yet you’re still challenged at the highest level. There are no concrete talks at the moment, but that’s not necessary. Internally, the club in Munich is first coordinating its efforts and figuring out who the top candidates are. Official negotiations with the player are expected to begin in January 2027.
