Ismael Saibari seized his opportunity against Union Berlin and scored his first goal for Bayern. This could be particularly interesting for Luis Díaz.
Ismael Saibari has made his first real mark at FC Bayern. In the 7-0 win over Union Berlin, the 25-year-old came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute—and needed just seven minutes to score his first competitive goal in a Bayern jersey.
With the score at 5-0, Saibari picked up speed on the left flank, drove dynamically toward the penalty area, and finished off his strong solo run himself. It was a goal that showed just what the summer signing can bring to Munich’s offense.
Saibari came into the game as a substitute for Luis Díaz, of all people. The Colombian had once again had a difficult outing. Although Díaz scored in the first half, the goal was disallowed for offside. Otherwise, the 29-year-old remained largely inconspicuous.
Saibari increases the pressure on Díaz
This could spark an interesting competition for the left wing position. Díaz is generally expected to be a starter, but he’s currently searching for his top form.
The Colombian has already squandered several opportunities in recent games. In the 2-1 win over Elversberg, Díaz missed a big chance shortly after coming on as a substitute, opting for a complicated shot despite Harry Kane being wide open.
Saibari, on the other hand, is still in the early stages of his time at Bayern. Following his transfer, the Moroccan must first get used to the system under Vincent Kompany, and due to his versatility, he cannot be classified solely as a competitor for Díaz.
His performance against Union likely impressed the coach, however. Saibari immediately brought energy to the game after coming on as a substitute, sought out scoring opportunities, and was rewarded with his first goal for FC Bayern.
The fact that Serge Gnabry also made his comeback at the same time and that Jamal Musiala is back to full fitness further intensifies the competition in Bayern’s offense.
For Díaz, this means his starting spot isn’t immediately in danger, but the competition behind him isn’t resting on its laurels. Against Union, Saibari clearly demonstrated for the first time that he, too, is staking a claim to more playing time.
