Joshua Kimmich continues to climb the DFB’s all-time rankings. Following Toni Kroos, several Bayern legends now lie ahead of the national team captain.
Joshua Kimmich reached another milestone in his career during the 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. The captain of the German national team played his 115th international match in Amsterdam, surpassing Toni Kroos in the process.
Kimmich now stands alone in seventh place among Germany’s all-time leaders in international appearances. And given his continued central role under Jürgen Klopp, his climb up the all-time list is likely far from over.
The Bayern star already has his sights set on the next name: Bastian Schweinsteiger made 121 international appearances during his career. Kimmich is now just six appearances away from tying his former Munich teammate.
Neuer and Müller are also within reach
After that, the gaps widen, but from today’s perspective, they are by no means out of reach. Manuel Neuer ended his DFB career with 128 appearances. Lukas Podolski has 130 appearances, and Thomas Müller has 131.
If Kimmich remains a regular starter under Klopp, he could gradually close in on these milestones in the coming years. His first appearance under the new national team coach certainly does not suggest that his importance to the national team is waning.
On the contrary: Klopp has confirmed Kimmich as captain and moved him back to his preferred position in central midfield. In the 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, the 31-year-old was among the best German players in that role.
Miroslav Klose is even further ahead with 137 international appearances. Lothar Matthäus still holds the all-time record with 150 appearances.

Whether Kimmich will reach those heights depends on how long he continues his national team career and what role he plays on the road to the 2028 European Championship and beyond.
One thing is already certain: In the DFB’s all-time rankings, Kimmich has surpassed some of the biggest names in German soccer. Schweinsteiger is now the next Bayern legend on his list—and Kimmich is just six more international appearances away from catching up to him.
