Florian Wirtz and FC Bayern—this connection is likely to fuel transfer rumors for a long time to come. The Munich club once made an intensive effort to sign the German national team player before he decided to join Liverpool FC. Currently, however, the record champions have no plans to make another move.
This is according to BILD’s soccer editor, Christian Falk. He reports that rumors suggesting Bayern might be preparing a new bid for Wirtz are unfounded. Aside from financial considerations, there is one key sporting reason for this: The Munich club already considers itself exceptionally well-positioned in attacking midfield.
Even the current situation surrounding Jamal Musiala apparently does nothing to change this. Following his injury issues from last season and his health problems, the Bayern star is still searching for his top form. In the long term, however, club officials are fully committed to Musiala, who is under contract for the long term.
Added to this is the development of Michael Olise. Coach Vincent Kompany is increasingly experimenting with using the Frenchman not exclusively on the right wing, but centrally as a playmaker. This gives Bayern another top-tier option for the positions where Wirtz also has his greatest strengths.
Olise is changing Bayern’s plans
Olise’s new role could prove particularly interesting for Munich’s long-term roster planning. Kompany is already giving his star attacker a great deal of freedom and is repeatedly deploying him in the number 10 position. Olise is also increasingly being used in central midfield for the French national team.
This gives Bayern several options for the attacking midfield. In addition to Musiala and Olise, the roster includes other players such as Ismael Saibari, Nathaniel Brown, and Serge Gnabry, who can switch flexibly between attacking positions.
A costly transfer of Wirtz would therefore not address any immediate sporting need at this time. Added to this is the fact that Liverpool once paid an enormous transfer fee for the German international. A potential move to Munich is likely to be correspondingly expensive.
The fact that Bayern continues to be confronted with rumors about Wirtz time and again is primarily due to their shared history.
Wirtz and Bayern have a long history together
Before Wirtz decided to join Liverpool, the Munich club had courted him intensively. According to BILD, there were two secret meetings at the time—first in Munich and then in Liverpool. In the end, then-Liverpool coach Arne Slot convinced the national team player to make the move to England.
This history is why Wirtz continues to be regularly linked with FC Bayern. Should he ever seek a return to the Bundesliga, Falk believes the Munich club would be an obvious destination.
Currently, however, there is no talk of this. Bayern has no plans for a new push and considers itself well-positioned on the field.
Of course, the situation could change in the future. At this point, however, there are strong indications that Kompany wants to further develop his offense around Musiala and, in particular, Olise, rather than sign another top-tier playmaker. A new Bayern bid for Wirtz is not on the table at the moment.
