On Matchday 4 of the Bundesliga, just before the start of Oktoberfest, FC Bayern put on a goal-scoring spectacle against Union Berlin. The Munich team won 7-0. Here are the FCBinside individual player ratings for the Bayern stars.
Manuel Neuer: In the first half, he made an Algeria-style foray all the way to the midfield line and cleared a ball with a sliding tackle. He made two more saves at the start of the second half. Otherwise, he was largely unoccupied—but he was there when needed. Grade: 2.
Josip Stanisic: Had a shot on goal during a run against visiting goalkeeper Rönnow, who was able to block it with his foot. Played solidly otherwise. Grade: 3.
Jonathan Tah: Had a good header opportunity, but Union goalkeeper Rönnow was able to make the save. In the few situations where he was called upon defensively, Tah defended with brutal consistency. Grade: 2.
Dayot Upamecano: Was underchallenged defensively but repeatedly showed effort in Bayern’s build-up play. He remained in the locker room at halftime; Kim came on in his place. Grade: 3.
Alphonso Davies: Set up Musiala’s 1-0 goal with a lovely pass. He brought his dynamism into play time and again. He also made dangerous runs up front leading up to Saibari’s 5-0 goal, which he assisted. Great game by Davies! Grade: 2.
Joshua Kimmich: Had everything under control—how could it be any other way with a score like this? Kimmich was a true passing machine. The boss! Grade: 2.
Aleksandar Pavlovic: Won the ball leading up to the 1-0 goal. Played clever passes, made runs into open spaces, and even drew spontaneous applause for a Zidane-style spin. A really strong game from Pavlovic! Grade: 2.
Michael Olise: Shot well over the bar once early on. Rönnow was able to stop his next long-range shot. After that, however, Olise’s aim was perfect: His shot into the corner for the 3–0 was unstoppable. Olise delivered a textbook cross to Kane for his header that made it 4–0. Then the technical wizard scored to make it 6–0 for Bayern. And then again for the 7–0! Every goal was a little work of art. Another world-class performance from the Frenchman. Grade: 1.
Jamal Musiala: Blasted the ball precisely and powerfully into the right corner for Bayern’s 1–0 lead. Was always available up front and helped out defensively as well. Provided the assist for Olise’s 3–0 goal. One goal, one assist, plenty of effort, and a joy for the game. A very good performance from Bayern’s No. 10. It’s just a joy to watch Musiala work his magic. Grade: A.
Luis Diaz: Scored in the first half, but was offside—the goal didn’t count. Otherwise, Diaz was once again lackluster. You can just tell he’s lacking power. The international break—during which he wasn’t called up for Colombia—will do him good. Grade: 4.
Harry Kane: Took two deep breaths and slotted it home—Kane coolly converted the penalty into the left corner to make it 2–0. It was his 100th Bundesliga goal in his 98th game. Unbelievable! Kane then scored his 101st goal with a header off a perfect cross from Olise. It’s no wonder Kane is a hot contender for the Ballon d’Or. Another Kane masterclass. Grade: 1.
Substitutes:
Minjae Kim (46’ for Upamecano): Was alert and defended cleanly. Grade: 3.
Ismael Saibari (63’ for Diaz): Came on, saw, and scored. After a pass from Davies, Saibari dribbled beautifully through the Berlin defense and scored his first goal in a Bayern jersey. The new signing’s celebration was understandably exuberant. Grade: 2.
Tom Bischof (63′ for Pavlovic): Recorded two assists: The youngster set up Olise for the 6–0 and 7–0 goals. A solid substitute appearance. Rating: 2.
Serge Gnabry (77th minute, for Olise): Made his comeback after a long injury layoff. Came on too late to be evaluated.
Nathaniel Brown (77′ for Davies): Came on too late to be rated.
