Jonas Urbig appears to be on the verge of a call-up to the German national team. According to information from BILD, the Bayern goalkeeper will be called up by new national team coach Jürgen Klopp for the upcoming international matches. The 23-year-old is initially expected to serve as a backup.
Urbig is expected to be among the goalkeepers Klopp selects for the upcoming matches, behind Marc-André ter Stegen and alongside Alexander Nübel. According to the report, Finn Dahmen can also look forward to a call-up.
Meanwhile, the most important decision regarding the goalkeeper position is said to have already been made. According to consistent reports, Klopp has settled on Marc-André ter Stegen as the new No. 1. The 34-year-old is returning to the DFB squad after a lengthy absence and is expected to guard the German goal in the future following Manuel Neuer’s retirement.
This means Urbig will likely take on the role of the challenger for the time being. For the Bayern Munich goalkeeper, however, the nomination is still an important step. At Bayern, he is currently still behind Manuel Neuer in the pecking order but continues to see playing time. Most recently, Urbig was between the posts in Elversberg over the weekend.
Urbig has kept a low profile lately
There, the 23-year-old once again filled in for Manuel Neuer and, in the 2-1 victory, made his 34th competitive appearance for Munich since his transfer from 1. FC Köln.
When asked about a possible call-up, however, Urbig did not want to dwell on the national team. “We still have the game against Union Berlin coming up. That’s where our full focus is right now. And only after that will I start thinking about anything else,” explained the Bayern goalkeeper.

When he was subsequently reminded that the DFB nomination would take place as early as Thursday—and thus before the Union match—Urbig stuck to his guns: “Yes, that’s before the match. But my focus is still on Union.”
Now it looks as though Klopp is indeed counting on the Bayern goalkeeper. The call-up would give Urbig the opportunity to showcase himself to the national team under the new head coach. His immediate outlook is clear: Ter Stegen is set to be the number one, while Urbig will initially be competing for the spot behind him.
