Jamal Musiala’s successful comeback continues to bring great joy to FC Bayern. Uli Hoeneß is deeply moved and also praises Vincent Kompany.
Jamal Musiala’s successful return to the starting lineup at FC Bayern has brought relief not only on the field. Honorary President Uli Hoeneß was also visibly moved by the 23-year-old’s return.
“I already said weeks ago how much this means to me. And I was incredibly happy about his performance against the Norwegian team and also his goal,” Hoeneß explained on Monday evening on the sidelines of a ceremony hosted by FC Bayern’s basketball department.
In the 5–0 win over Bodo/Glimt, Musiala was back in the starting lineup for the first time since his two collapses during preseason. Just 76 seconds after halftime, the attacking player scored the decisive 1-0 goal, kicking off Munich’s decisive victory in their Champions League opener.
For Hoeneß, even the decision to start Musiala was anything but a foregone conclusion. He said he had “sometimes thought: It’s pretty bold to put him back in the starting lineup right away for an important game after what we’ve been through. So that’s really great.”
Hoeneß raves about Musiala and Kompany
Musiala’s goal particularly impressed the 74-year-old. The goal was “unimitable, of course”—“just the way only he can do it: turning in the tightest of spaces and then shooting right away. And now we all have to hope that he stays healthy,” Hoeneß emphasized.
Musiala had reacted with visible relief after his goal and was subsequently celebrated by his teammates. Vincent Kompany also embraced his protégé after the goal. The Bayern coach had already made it clear after the match just how significant this success was for Musiala following the difficult past few months.
Hoeneß himself is deliberately refraining from getting further involved in the care of the young attacking star. There is currently no direct communication with Musiala: “He has so many people around him; there’s no need for me to be the twelfth person in the mix.”
All the more reason for the honorary president to trust Kompany. The Belgian is doing “a great job of developing him and supporting him.”
Following his successful return to the starting lineup against Bodo/Glimt, Musiala earned additional playing time as a substitute in the 2-1 win at Elversberg. At FC Bayern, the national team player continues to be carefully eased back into full training and match action.
