Florian Wirtz and FC Bayern—this transfer rumor could resurface sooner than expected. After Bayern Munich lost out to Liverpool FC in the race for the German national team player in 2025, interest in the 23-year-old is reportedly far from over.
As TEAMtalk reports, officials at Säbener Straße continue to follow Wirtz’s development in England very closely. Of particular interest to Bayern: Reports suggest that doubts have begun to surface at Liverpool as to whether the German international can, in the long term, fulfill the exceptional role that the club had hoped he would play when they signed him.
In 2025, Liverpool paid a whopping 125 million euros for Wirtz, beating out Manchester City, among others, in the race to sign him. Bayern Munich had also courted the then-Leverkusen star intensively but ultimately could not keep up with the financial demands of the transfer.
On the field, Wirtz’s first year in England was disappointing. In 33 Premier League matches, he managed just five goals and three assists. He has also gotten off to a slow start this season, with only one assist in his first five games.
Bayern is waiting for his chance
According to information from TEAMtalk, Munich’s high regard for Wirtz has not changed. Bayern reportedly continues to view the attacking player as an “exceptional talent” and is closely monitoring how his situation at Liverpool develops.
However, there is no talk of an imminent transfer. Liverpool currently has no plans to let Wirtz go. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, the 23-year-old is instead expected to be given the opportunity to finally establish himself in England.
Consequently, Iraola believes Wirtz has what it takes to become a key part of his new project at Liverpool. The coach is therefore expected to be given the entire season to work with the German.
Nevertheless, there are reportedly concerns within the club as to whether Wirtz can actually reach the level that Liverpool expects of him, given his massive transfer fee.
This is exactly where Bayern could come into play.
A decision could be made in the summer of 2027
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool could reassess the situation at the end of the season if Wirtz fails to make the hoped-for leap in performance. For Munich, this could be the first real opportunity to revisit the possibility of signing him.
A potential transfer to Bayern thus depends on several factors. First, Liverpool would have to be willing to discuss a sale at all. Currently, there are no concrete signs of this. Additionally, Wirtz himself would likely have to consider a return to the Bundesliga.
And financially, too, a deal would be anything but straightforward. Given Liverpool’s massive investment, the Premier League club is unlikely to let the German national team player go on the cheap.
