Luis Díaz and his finishing—this topic continues to be a point of discussion for FC Bayern even after their 2-1 victory over SV Elversberg. The Colombian squandered a huge opportunity in Saarland in an extremely careless manner, causing considerable frustration among his own teammates.
Díaz had come on as a substitute in the 65th minute and could have restored Bayern’s lead just two minutes later. Michael Olise set up the 29-year-old perfectly, leaving him alone in front of Elversberg goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof.
Instead of shooting right away or passing to the completely unmarked Harry Kane, Díaz hesitated at first. He then tried to beat Kristof with a backheel. The keeper, however, wasn’t caught off guard and made the save.
Kane and Stanisic reacted strongly
The reactions of his teammates spoke volumes. Kane had positioned himself in the penalty area and was waiting for the cross. When Díaz instead went for the spectacular finish himself, the Englishman let out a loud cry and signaled to his teammate that he had been completely unmarked.
Josip Stanisic’s reaction was even more pronounced. The Croatian had apparently already anticipated the goal and started to celebrate. After the missed opportunity, the defender cursed and looked in disbelief toward the Bayern bench.

The scene also sparked discussion on DAZN. “That fits the picture. He’s leaving too many chances on the table. It’s very laissez-faire. If it works out, we’ll have another dream goal. If not, it looks silly,” commented analyst Max Siebald.
Michael Ballack saw it similarly: “Too flashy. No matter what, you have to put the ball in the net. If it works, it’s fantastic. If not, it’s a reckless miss.”
Eberl stands by Díaz
The scene is typical of the Colombian’s season so far. Díaz had already missed several chances against Schalke. Even in the 5-0 win over Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League, the winger lacked the necessary finishing touch in front of the goal despite having good opportunities.
Max Eberl, however, didn’t want to heap too much criticism on Díaz after the Elversberg game. The sporting director is convinced that the situation will turn around.
“As a defender who’s never scored a goal, what am I supposed to tell Lucho Díaz about how to score better? Lucho just doesn’t have the momentum right now. He’s probably thinking: Should I take it right away, or should I try again? By then, the ball’s already gone. But as I said: We missed a few chances today. Eventually, he’ll break out of his slump,” said Eberl.
For Bayern, the missed shot ultimately had no consequences. Just a few minutes later, Kane sealed the victory with his goal to make it 2–1.
For Díaz, however, the play must still be particularly frustrating. The Colombian continues to find himself in dangerous scoring positions on a regular basis, but he’s currently making too little of them. The fact that even his teammates are now reacting strongly to missed chances shows just how much room for improvement there currently is in front of the goal.
