This summer, there was repeated talk at FC Bayern that the executives led by Max Eberl would have to cut costs. While the club was able to make a few signings, its financial leeway wasn’t unlimited. Bayern also had to rely on revenue and player sales.
This meant that the summer was far from easy for Max Eberl. And not just for Eberl—but for others at the club as well, since, according to recent reports, Vincent Kompany would have liked to sign a third established professional in addition to Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown.
Although the young Bara Sapoko Ndiaye—who had previously been on loan—joined the team in the end, the club had certainly hoped for at least one more addition.
FC Bayern: Eberl Knew Early On About Transfer Pressure
A Sport1 report now reveals that the supervisory board approached sporting director Max Eberl very early this summer to inform him of the requirements.
The powerful Bayern executives made it clear that they would accept a maximum deficit of 50 million euros in the transfer balance sheet. That’s why Eberl knew early on that the goal was to sell players for as much as possible. This worked quite well for some players—Noel Aseko, for example, was sold, and the club also received money for Alexander Nübel.
The crux of the matter for Bayern: Some players had fairly high salaries, which meant that the total package—comprising that salary and Bayern’s demands—was too high for some clubs. That’s why compromises had to be made—as in the case of Joao Palhinha, who brought in 15 million euros instead of the desired 25 million.
Bayern has recently invested heavily in its infrastructure. To ensure they’re prepared in the long term to spend larger sums when necessary, Bayern wants to be ready. Money needs to come in, especially since the additional millions from a lucrative Club World Cup will be missing this summer. That’s why they also sold young players, such as Maurice Krattenmacher. However, maintaining financial balance also ensures that Bayern can nip discussions—such as those surrounding Michael Olise’s potential departure—in the bud.
