FC Bayern won 4-1 on the road against VfL Osnabrück in the first round of the cup. After an early dream goal by the home team, the record cup champion ultimately prevailed deservedly.
That’s why the players were thoroughly satisfied after the game. After the shock in the opening minutes, Bayern conceded almost nothing and at times dominated their opponents at will.
As was the case against VfB Stuttgart (5–1) and Borussia Dortmund (2–1), Bayern were unable to keep a clean sheet, but the overall assessment following the match was still quite positive. This included the assessment by Vincent Kompany, the FCB coach.
Kompany: “That’s perfectly fine.”
The Belgian told ARD after the game: “Yes, it went well, but that first goal was insane. The way that goal went in—that was just incredible. It really gets the crowd going, especially in the first ten minutes. But we stayed calm. And most importantly, we played a solid second half. We knew going in that it wouldn’t be easy.”
Regarding the goal they conceded, he didn’t necessarily want to pin the blame on the center backs, who let themselves be outmuscled too easily in one-on-one situations.
“I told them at halftime that you can’t easily win aerial duels here—you have to wait until the ball comes down. Osnabrück does that a lot, as do teams from lower leagues. The forwards are very good in that area, and you just have to acknowledge that they did a good job,” Kompany explained.
Otherwise, he was largely satisfied with his team’s performance: “We kept finding open spaces. They got bigger as the game went on. That created opportunities for us. A 4-1 away win in the cup against a compact opponent—that’s perfectly fine. When you win like that, it’s good. Now we move on.”
For the coach, it’s now important that the fundamentals of FC Bayern’s play are in order. “There are good stretches in our play where you can already see that we’re playing quite well together. Our goal-scoring threat is good, the intensity is good—it’s not so easy to maintain all of that. If that works even better, then we can also talk about the finer details,” the Belgian concluded.
