On Wednesday, FC Bayern will face VfL Osnabrück in the DFB Cup. The away game at Bremer Brücke could be a lively affair. Vincent Kompany, the coach of the record-holding champions, is prepared for anything.
At Tuesday’s press conference, the Belgian spoke about the opponent and what matters most for his team. The match is taking place well after the rest of the first round of the cup because the Super Cup against BVB was held on the actual cup weekend.
For Bayern, the match in Osnabrück is a must-win, but they’ll still be on their guard. After all, they ran into trouble in the first round last season, when they only narrowly defeated SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
Kompany warns against cup opponent Osnabrück
Kompany knows it could be a difficult match. “I think the most important thing is to realize that anything can be difficult. Not to underestimate any of it. I’ve heard a lot about the Bremer Brücke—that it can be tough here. It’s a puzzle you always have to solve. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a Bundesliga team or a second-division team,” said the Bayern coach.
For him, it’s not about shining right now. “Nothing is more important than winning at the moment. You have to take in all the information, prepare the team, and then make decisions. We always want to achieve the maximum. And we have a roster that allows us to do just that,” Kompany continued.
He expects a compact opponent. Kompany has prepared by watching games from last season and the start of the new season. “They were compact, posed a threat from deep, and countered well. Of course, not everything is clicking right now, but they found their compactness against Bochum. Ultimately, they solved a lot of problems defensively last season, and I can well imagine that they’ll rely on that same successful approach against us,” he assessed.
