Jürgen Klopp is the new national team coach and will attempt to revolutionize the DFB in the near future. In doing so, he is, of course, also in communication with the clubs, including FC Bayern.
Klopp has already spoken at length with Vincent Kompany, the coach of the record-holding champions. The conversation naturally focused on FC Bayern’s players, but also on planning for upcoming matches and his tenure as DFB coach.
He also spoke with Max Eberl, as FC Bayern’s sporting director revealed around the time of the season opener against VfB Stuttgart (5–1). However, this conversation did not take place after Klopp’s appointment as national team coach.
Eberl Reveals Phone Call with Klopp
Speaking to Sky, Eberl then revealed exactly what the conversation was about. “For my part, I have a very, very good relationship with Jürgen,” said Eberl—and shared a previously unknown anecdote: “When he left Dortmund and was about to join Liverpool, I at least had the courage to call him while I was in Gladbach.”
Specifically, the conversation at that time centered on the period following Lucien Favre’s resignation from the Foals. Eberl inquired about Klopp before the latter completed his move to Liverpool FC.
But those efforts came to a quick end. “That was settled once he signed with Liverpool. I think he made a good decision,” Eberl said with a smile. In Liverpool, Klopp quickly became a legend, winning the Champions League with the Reds and bringing the league title back to Anfield Road. It’s unlikely that Eberl had high hopes at the time regarding a possible Klopp appointment at Borussia. But it was certainly worth a try.
Incidentally, Andre Schubert succeeded Favre in Mönchengladbach at the time, though he remained as coach of the Foals for just over a year before being replaced again. Dieter Hecking then joined Gladbach.
