FC Bayern got off to a dream start to the new Bundesliga season with a 5-1 victory over VfB Stuttgart. Following Munich’s convincing performance, the excitement surrounding the record champions was understandably high. Manuel Neuer, however, wasn’t ready to get carried away just yet and urged patience after the lopsided win.
The Bayern captain initially expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance: “Stuttgart is a good team; they have good players and a strong offense,” Neuer explained in an interview with SAT.1 after the final whistle .
Despite the quality of the opponent, the Munich team was highly focused from the start: “But we were determined from the very beginning to give it our all to get off to a perfect start to the season. I think we showed that today,” said Neuer.
In the end, the scoreboard showed a decisive 5–1 victory. For Neuer and his teammates, however, this success is merely the first step in a long season.
Triple or nothing? “It’s too early to say.”
After the game, Neuer was therefore asked whether only the treble matters for Bayern this season.
“It’s too early to say,” Neuer replied. Instead, the goalkeeper pointed to the long-term development under Vincent Kompany.
“We’re working hard—this is our third season with Vinnie,” explained the Bayern captain. The main focus, he said, is on learning from the experiences of last season.
The team needs to continue to improve, especially in the decisive matches: “We’ll try to work on the things that didn’t go so well last season so that we can take that final step in the important knockout matches, like against PSG,” said Neuer.
For Neuer, it’s clear that Bayern must first tackle other challenges before they can talk about major title goals: “But now we have to do our homework and take it step by step,” the captain emphasized.
The 5-1 victory over Stuttgart provides a positive starting point for that. However, the real tests for the Munich team won’t come until later in the season.
