FC Bayern won its first title right off the bat in the first competitive match of the new season. They secured a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park, meaning the Super Cup is heading back to Munich once again.
Bayern played quite well, especially in the first half, when they were the better team than BVB and still missed a few chances despite holding a 2–0 lead.
Still, not everyone was satisfied with the game. Joshua Kimmich, the record champion’s midfielder, criticized the FCB’s performance and sees a few areas that need work in the coming weeks.
Kimmich Dissatisfied Despite the Title
After the game in Dortmund, he spoke with Sky. Regarding Ramy Bensebaini’s red card, which came in the closing minutes, he said: “I agree with Patrick (Ittrich, referee expert)—you can look at it either way. But I think it’s good that the referees on the field are still making decisions and not just waiting for the VAR.”
Ittrich’s reasoning was that, given the momentum of the play, a red card couldn’t be overturned, but a yellow card could have stood.
Kimmich didn’t think the game itself was brilliant. “To be honest, I didn’t think the first half was that good. Of course, we were leading 2–0. We’re glad we won. But we’re still a long way from the kind of performance we need to deliver, and we have a lot, a lot of work ahead of us. We weren’t active enough with the ball, and we didn’t always manage to support each other well,” said the midfielder.
And he added: “We also gave up too many chances, especially on crosses. We need to improve significantly in that area. Plus, in the second half, we weren’t able to control the game and settle things down. We’re satisfied with the result, but not necessarily with the way we played.”
