The FC Bayern women’s team faced VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday evening in a bid to win their first title of the new season. At stake was the Super Cup, which both teams were determined to win.
Bayern went into the game as the favorites, but Wolfsburg is a team that is certainly capable of giving even a top-tier opponent a run for its money.
Nevertheless, Bayern had everything in their own hands going into the match, as Coach Jose Barcala’s squad was more cohesive and also had individual advantages on their side.
Bayern Women Win the Super Cup
And right from the opening minutes, the favorites were the better team. Linda Dallmann, in particular, kept driving the attack, but Bayern’s women were still too disjointed in the offensive third at the start. Wolfsburg had the first shots on goal, but Bayern was then able to gain the upper hand.
It still took a while, though, for them to take the lead. Jovana Damnjanovic scored to make it 1–0 following a free kick from midfield by Klara Bühl. That goal was well-deserved at that point, though it didn’t exactly come during a period of sustained pressure by the FCB women. As is often the case, the lead gave them confidence.
Wolfsburg still managed to land a few jabs, even hitting the post. Nevertheless, Bayern now looked more incisive and extended their lead to 2–0 before halftime through Klara Bühl. She curled a free kick directly into the far corner. That was also the score at halftime.
Immediately after the break, Bühl scored to make it 3–0. It was a spectacular solo effort by the FC Bayern player. That effectively sealed the victory, as Wolfsburg was unable to recover from this setback. The game remained lively, with periods of more chances alternating with quieter stretches.
Both teams also made substitutions, which were intended to inject fresh energy into the game. Overall, however, with the lead in hand, Bayern played it out quite cleverly, didn’t allow too many chances, and—most importantly—didn’t invite Wolfsburg back into the game with their own mistakes. As a result, it was a well-deserved 3–0 victory in the end, which also marked their first title of the new season.
