FC Bayern is banking on youth in midfield. Following Leon Goretzka’s departure, 18-year-old Bara Sapoko Ndiaye, of all people, is set to take on more responsibility. The Senegalese player brings a skill set that is virtually unmatched in the Munich squad. Nevertheless, the plan is not without risk.
Following his loan spell last season, Bayern has now signed Ndiaye permanently from Gambinos Stars and secured his services through 2031. For the youngster, however, this does not mark a complete fresh start.
Ndiaye is already familiar with the club, his teammates, and the routines at Säbener Straße. Even before his permanent transfer was finalized, he trained with the team and played in preseason friendlies.
That should make the transition considerably easier for him. At the same time, the Munich club apparently has specific ideas about what role the 18-year-old is expected to take on in the future.
Following Goretzka’s departure, Ndiaye is being lined up as an additional option for central midfield. However, due to his age and different playing style, he is not a direct replacement for Goretzka.
Ndiaye brings a new element to Bayern
For years in Munich, Goretzka relied on his physicality, his runs into the opponent’s penalty area, and his heading ability. Especially during his best years at Bayern, the German international regularly found himself in scoring positions.
Ndiaye interprets his role differently. While the Senegalese player also possesses a pronounced box-to-box dynamic, his actions take place primarily in the central midfield.
One of his most striking qualities is his ability to dribble with the ball. Ndiaye can cover ground quickly and barely loses momentum even at high speeds. This gives him the ability to break through opposing lines not only with passes but also with his own runs.
Added to this is his drive toward the goal. If a scoring opportunity presents itself from the second line, Ndiaye doesn’t shy away from taking it.
That doesn’t make him a fully-fledged playmaker by any means. But no one should expect that from an 18-year-old anyway. What’s far more important is that, with Ndiaye, Vincent Kompany gains an additional element for his midfield.
Bayern’s plan involves a risk
The crucial question, however, is: Are Bayern taking too big a risk with this plan?
With Goretzka, an extremely experienced midfielder has left the club. Instead of signing an established replacement, the club’s leadership wants to give an 18-year-old prospect more opportunities.
However, this is exactly in line with the course Munich has set. The professional roster is deliberately not being overloaded so that young talents have a realistic chance of getting playing time. Ndiaye could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this strategy.
His career so far shows that he certainly has the determination to pursue this path. For Ndiaye, the dream of professional soccer was long associated with significantly greater hurdles than for many other young European players.
His path led him from Senegal Elite Stars to Gambinos Stars. Their connection to the Red&Gold Football youth network—a joint venture between FC Bayern and Los Angeles FC—ultimately opened the door to Munich.
Several tryouts followed before Bayern signed the midfielder on loan shortly after his 18th birthday. During this time, Ndiaye was able to convince the club’s officials that he could handle the significantly higher pace and demands at the German record champions.
Now comes the next step.
Ndiaye doesn’t have to replace Goretzka one-to-one. Rather, Bayern is counting on the youngster to bring his own qualities to the team and develop step by step. If this plan works, the Munich club would not only have developed an exciting midfielder but also proven that the deliberately smaller roster actually opens up new opportunities for young players.
A risk remains. But that is precisely where a great opportunity lies for both Bayern and Ndiaye.
