During preseason, numerous young players at FC Bayern took advantage of the absence of the World Cup squad members. While Bastian Assomo and Maycon Cardozo drew attention with spectacular plays, another youngster impressed in a completely different way: Tim Binder. The 19-year-old isn’t a classic game-changer—and that’s precisely why he could be of interest to Vincent Kompany.
Pre-season training offered the young talents at the Bayern Campus a rare opportunity. Numerous stars joined training late due to the World Cup. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Dayot Upamecano, among others, aren’t expected back in Munich for their fitness tests until the end of this week.
As a result, Kompany has had to rely more heavily on young players in the preseason friendlies so far. Binder was among the players who made the most of their opportunity.
The 19-year-old moved from FC Augsburg’s youth academy to the Bayern Campus back in 2019 and subsequently progressed through the record champion’s various youth teams. He has since also gained experience playing for the second team in the Regionalliga.
During summer training, Binder has now been given regular opportunities to train with the first team.
Kompany is impressed by Binder
Even in the friendly against SV Wehen Wiesbaden, the left-footed player caught the eye after coming on as a substitute on the right wing. He made an even bigger impression during the Asian tour.
In the 2-1 victory over Europa League champion Aston Villa, Binder played the entire match and impressed against top-tier Premier League opposition.
Kompany was subsequently impressed by the performances of his young players and spoke of an “impressive performance.”
“It’s hard to go into these games when so many players are still set to return, and yet to perform in a way that shows the FC Bayern Munich we can be,” explained the Bayern coach.
The Belgian singled out Cardozo, Assomo, and Binder in particular: “When I look at how the boys performed, I’m very pleased. It’s a way to strengthen our team.”
Binder stands out distinctly from other highly touted talents on campus. He possesses neither the flashy dribbling skills of Lennart Karl nor the explosiveness of Wisdom Mike. Physically, too, he isn’t a player who immediately stands out.
His strengths lie elsewhere.
Binder impresses with smart play rather than flashy moves
Binder stands out above all for his game intelligence, tactical understanding, and decision-making. The 19-year-old recognizes early on when he can pick up the pace and when a safe play is called for.
This quality can be particularly valuable in a dominant Bayern team. Binder doesn’t compulsively seek out spectacular plays, but rather tries to steer the game in the right direction. As a result, he commits comparatively few unnecessary turnovers.
Added to this is his versatility. Binder was primarily trained to play in central midfield, where he was deployed as an attacking midfielder or behind the strikers. He is now capable of playing all three attacking positions behind the center forward. The left-footed player has even seen action as a right back.
For a coach like Kompany, this makes him an interesting option for the squad.
Binder still lacks that outstanding individual quality that would immediately make him a candidate for a starting spot at FC Bayern. But that’s not what matters for the 19-year-old right now.
Rather, he has positioned himself this summer as a potential addition to the deliberately compact first-team roster. Should Kompany rotate his lineup during the long season or need alternatives due to injuries, Binder could get his chance time and again.
Other Bayern prospects have received significantly more attention in the past. Binder, on the other hand, seems to be the classic “anti-star” from the academy. No big statements, no spectacular playing style—but reliability, flexibility, and a remarkably good understanding of game situations.
That might not make for many headlines. But for the leap to the pros, these very qualities could be decisive.
