FC Bayern is determined to sell Joao Palhinha. So far, however, Aston Villa has only offered a loan with an option to buy—which could put pressure on the Munich club right up until Deadline Day.
In the transfer negotiations surrounding Joao Palhinha, FC Bayern and Aston Villa remain far apart on the desired structure of the deal. While the Munich club wants to draw a definitive line under the matter, the English club has so far been pushing for a loan deal.
According to reports from Sky and other media outlets, Aston Villa has now submitted a concrete offer to Bayern and sporting director Max Eberl. This offer calls for a loan of the 31-year-old that includes an option to buy. For the German record champions, however, such a model is not an option at this time.
Bayern’s stance apparently goes even a step further. According to the report, club officials are currently unwilling to agree even to a loan with an obligation to buy. The clear goal remains to sell Palhinha outright this summer, thereby generating a transfer fee and permanently saving on the Portuguese player’s high salary.
From the player’s perspective, however, reaching an agreement is unlikely to pose a major hurdle. Palhinha and Aston Villa are in basic agreement on a transfer. According to Sky, the parties involved have already discussed specific figures.
Will Bayern change its stance on Deadline Day?
The key factor will therefore be whether Aston Villa revises its offer once more—or whether Bayern will have to soften its hardline stance as the transfer window draws to a close.
Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg considers at least one scenario plausible in which Munich might ultimately agree to another loan deal. “I believe that, if we still don’t have a solution by Deadline Day, a loan with an option to buy is the least bad option Bayern would be willing to accept.”
For now, a sale remains by far the preferred solution. However, if no buyer willing to sign Palhinha on a permanent basis can be found shortly before the transfer window closes, Aston Villa’s model could once again become an option for Bayern, according to Plettenberg.
For Eberl, however, another loan would be anything but the ideal solution. Last season, FC Bayern had already loaned the midfielder to Tottenham Hotspur. The London club had a purchase option but ultimately decided against signing him permanently. Palhinha therefore returned to Munich this summer.
The Portuguese player had only been signed from Fulham in 2024 for around 50 million euros. However, the hoped-for breakthrough at Bayern Munich failed to materialize. Palhinha apparently no longer plays a decisive role in the club’s long-term sporting plans.
Palhinha has no future at Bayern
Competition in central midfield is fierce. Kompany has established options at his disposal in Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic, and Tom Bischof is also expected to take on more responsibility in the future. Bara Sapoko Ndiaye is also part of the squad following his permanent signing.

Palhinha himself has now accepted that his prospects at FC Bayern are limited and is actively considering a move elsewhere. In addition to Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Benfica have recently been mentioned as potential suitors. However, the lead to Birmingham is currently the most concrete.
Aston Villa can also offer Palhinha an attractive sporting opportunity. Coach Unai Emery is said to have already signaled to the midfielder that he is firmly counting on him. The basic conditions for a transfer would thus be in place.
The sticking point remains the transfer structure. FC Bayern is still hoping for a permanent sale. However, the closer Deadline Day gets, the greater the pressure on Eberl could become to reach a compromise. In that case, even a loan with an option to buy—which has been rejected so far—might no longer be completely out of the question.
