Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern appears to have been settled. The sporting director is said to have already been informed of the club bosses’ decision.
Over the past few months, there has been repeated speculation about Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern. Now, all signs point to the 52-year-old remaining in Munich beyond the end of his current contract. The groundwork for an extension has already been laid.
According to information from Sport BILD, FC Bayern’s executive committee has voted in favor of extending Eberl’s contract, which runs through June 30, 2027. President Herbert Hainer is said to have personally informed the sporting director of this decision during the club’s recent trip to South Korea and Hong Kong.
However, the extension has not yet been formally finalized. The nine-member supervisory board must still approve the proposal. According to the report, the relevant meeting is scheduled for August 25. A rejection would come as a surprise, though: Eberl is said to already have five of the nine votes secured.
Eberl has convinced Hoeneß and Rummenigge
It is remarkable that the sentiment surrounding the sporting director has shifted so dramatically. Just a few months ago, there were still serious doubts about Eberl’s future. In May, Uli Hoeneß publicly estimated the likelihood of his continued employment at “60 to 40 percent.” Most recently, at Tegernsee, the honorary president, however, was already speaking of “one hundred percent.”
This change of heart apparently also stems from Eberl’s altered approach to working with the club’s influential decision-makers. According to information from Sport BILD, the sporting director has increasingly sought dialogue with Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge over the past 80 days or so. Eberl has regularly involved both of them, particularly on transfer matters. This greater transparency has been viewed positively within the club.
According to the report, the decisive meeting of the Executive Committee took place on the morning of July 30—the very day Hoeneß made his “100 percent” statement. At that meeting, the committee voted in favor of extending Eberl’s contract. However, the new term of the contract and Eberl’s salary remain to be determined. These points must be discussed and decided upon by the entire supervisory board.
Eberl’s work in the transfer market is also said to have played a decisive role in the reassessment. In particular, the signings of Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari are viewed positively internally. For the Saibari transfer, which cost around 55 million euros, Eberl and CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen jointly led the negotiations with PSV Eindhoven. The Brown deal, on the other hand, is largely attributed to Eberl.
Eberl Earns Praise for the Saibari and Brown Transfers
The sporting director is said to have impressed with his preparation and negotiating skills in both transfers. In doing so, Eberl apparently also managed to dispel the criticism that had previously existed internally—that he sometimes closed deals too quickly and, as a result, at too high a cost. Brown and Saibari were also signed early on, which means Bayern is less likely to find itself under intense pressure to act just before Deadline Day this summer.

One task remains for Eberl, however. The supervisory board expects further results regarding the sales of players such as Joao Palhinha, Sacha Boey, and Bryan Zaragoza. According to the report, the sporting director is under pressure regarding these personnel matters. At the same time, there is agreement between the executive board and the supervisory board that, even with further departures, no additional signings are currently planned for this summer’s transfer window.
However, this is unlikely to change the fundamental decision regarding Eberl’s future. The Executive Committee has given the green light, Hainer has already personally informed the sporting director, and the necessary majority on the supervisory board appears to be in place. The next formal step is now scheduled for August 25.
