However, FC Bayern is apparently already making plans beyond that date—and wants to keep the club legend tied to the team even after he retires.
As reported by Sport BILD, officials at Säbener Straße have already held initial discussions about Neuer’s potential future after his playing career. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is said to have already broached the subject with the goalkeeper.
Neuer can envision a return to FC Bayern
According to the report, Neuer is generally open to working for the record-holding champions after his playing career ends. For now, however, the 40-year-old wants to take a deliberate break before taking on a new role.
A return in an advisory role at a later date is considered quite realistic, according to Sport BILD. A role as a brand ambassador would also be conceivable. However, concrete decisions are not expected to be made until after he retires.
Neuer and Dreesen have had a close relationship for many years. The two are in regular contact, which should facilitate discussions about a future at FC Bayern.
Urbig is expected to take over step by step
At the same time, the Munich club is already pushing ahead with the generational transition in goal. Jonas Urbig is set to be systematically groomed for the role of future number one next season and, if possible, gain playing experience in important matches.
