Dayot Upamecano has committed himself to FC Bayern for the long term with his contract extension. However, rumors of a possible transfer don’t seem to be completely off the table—one detail in the new contract could stir things up as early as next summer.
With Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension through 2030, FC Bayern seemed to have secured one of its most important players for the long term this year. Under Vincent Kompany, the French national team player has developed into the undisputed defensive leader and is now one of the record champions’ top performers.
At the World Cup, Upamecano was among the best defenders in the tournament. Former France coach Didier Deschamps recently emphasized that Upamecano is among the very best in the world.
Upamecano’s release clause could become a factor
The contract extension brought great relief to the club in Munich on Säbener Straße. Sporting director Max Eberl stated at the time: “A squad needs anchors. With Dayot, we’re adding another one.”
Nevertheless, speculation about his future cannot be entirely ruled out. Upamecano is said to have secured a buyout clause as part of his contract extension. This clause can reportedly be activated as early as the summer of 2027 and is said to be set at around 65 million euros.
Interestingly, the defender’s current market value is estimated at 75 million euros following his strong World Cup performance. For a center back of his age and caliber, such a transfer fee would be quite attractive in today’s transfer market. Should a top European club express concrete interest, this could make his future a topic of discussion again as early as next year.
Before extending his contract, Upamecano had already been linked to Real Madrid on several occasions. At the time, there were even reports suggesting that a free transfer to Spain had been on the table. Ultimately, however, the Frenchman decided to stay in Munich and signed a new long-term contract.
The buyout clause, however, changes the situation. Unlike with Michael Olise, whose contract does not include such a clause, Bayern Munich would have only limited room to maneuver if a suitable offer were to come along.
