At FC Bayern Munich, new reports have raised further questions about the future of Max Eberl. While Uli Hoeneß has recently publicly expressed doubts about a long-term collaboration, a much more differentiated picture is apparently emerging internally
The discussion surrounding the sporting director picked up speed again shortly before the DFB Cup final. In a much-noticed interview, Hoeneß stated that the chances of Eberl’s contract being extended beyond 2027 were only „60 to 40“. At the same time, the honorary president made it clear that there were still reservations within the supervisory board
However, the Abendzeitung München now reports that the mood within the sporting management is much more harmonious than has recently been widely reported
No rift between Eberl and Freund?
According to the report, there are no serious tensions between Max Eberl and sporting director Christoph Freund, and the cooperation is described as constructive and harmonious
This contradicts earlier reports by kicker that FC Bayern „has not been a unit for several months“. The specialist magazine had reported several times in recent months about internal differences within the management team – including a strained relationship between Eberl and Freund
The new development is therefore particularly noteworthy, as there are apparently different perceptions internally as to how tense the situation at Säbener Straße really is
Supervisory board still not fully convinced
Regardless of this, it remains to be seen how the supervisory board plans to deal with Eberl and Freund in the long term
While the contract extension of CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is practically only a formality according to AZ, Eberl and Freund are still waiting for clarity regarding their future
Eberl in particular is apparently under particular scrutiny, with internal accusations that he did not get the maximum out of the sales of Mathys Tel and Kingsley Coman
Hoeneß‘ public statements have caused additional unrest, with the honorary president openly addressing the doubts about Eberl, which, according to reports, has not gone down well even within the supervisory board
This means that it is no longer just about the future of the sporting director himself, but also about the question of how united the Bayern management actually is in this personnel matter.
