The possible transfer of Anthony Gordon to FC Bayern continues to cause discussion – now a former England international has come out with clear criticism.
FC Bayern have been linked with Anthony Gordon for weeks, with reports of an agreement with the player’s side and an initial offer. Now the discussion surrounding a possible transfer of the England international has been given additional fuel.
While the attacking player regularly puts in strong performances at Newcastle United and is considered an interesting candidate for the Munich attack, there are also critical voices from English soccer. Ex-Liverpool professional Danny Murphy has now been particularly vocal, expressing clear doubts about a transfer on talkSPORT.
„I’m a bit surprised,“ explained Murphy. „I like Anthony Gordon, he has great strengths and qualities.“ At the same time, the former England international pointed out the 25-year-old’s performance fluctuations. „His consistency is a problem. He had this fantastic phase in Europe this season, but also a lot of penalties. This is his highest-scoring season.“
Especially in direct comparison with Bayern star Luis Diaz, Murphy believes Gordon is currently at a clear disadvantage: „If you look at where Bayern are at the moment, I don’t think he’s a threat to the starting eleven. He’s not at the level of Luis Diaz.“
„Would get an incredible contract“
From Gordon’s point of view, on the other hand, Murphy could well understand the transfer to Säbener Straße: „Of course he would get an incredible contract there. They will pay him more than Newcastle. And he is moving to a club that is more likely to win titles.“
Nevertheless, Murphy is certain that the 25-year-old would initially only take on a reserve role: „They’ll have 60 games, so he’ll get appearances. From a footballing point of view, I try to look at it from his perspective – apart from the financial gain. You’ll be on the bench.“
