Preparations for the upcoming season are underway at FC Bayern. Sporting director Christoph Freund has now explained the club’s plans for the center of the defense.
Although FC Bayern has recently been repeatedly linked to potential new signings for the defense, the club currently has no plans to strengthen the center of the defense. At the press conference ahead of the home game against FC St. Pauli, Christoph Freund stated: “We hope that Upa won’t be out for too long. We’re currently well-positioned and don’t see any major need for action there for the upcoming season.” He was also responding to persistent rumors surrounding the talented Spanish defender Dean Huijsen.
The 19-year-old is under contract with AFC Bournemouth, where he has been impressing with consistently strong performances. Huijsen is considered an exciting prospect and, according to Sky, has also been closely monitored by FC Bayern. At the moment, however, he is not a concrete target—not least because of his high buyout clause, which media reports say is between 50 and 60 million euros.
Dier is set to extend his contract in Munich
Nevertheless, Huijsen’s name continues to be closely monitored in Munich. According to BILD, he is among the players who could become interesting in the summer under certain circumstances—such as in the event of another injury or departure. At the moment, however, the record champions seem to be prioritizing continuity.
This approach is also evident in their handling of Eric Dier. The Englishman arrived as a short-term solution in January 2024, and much recently suggested that his contract in Munich would not be extended. But now there are signs of a reversal. According to Sky, a contract extension beyond the summer is once again considered realistic due to his consistently strong recent performances. Bayern Munich could thus continue to prioritize stability over major transfers in defense in the future.
