Ian Maatsen is one of the few bright spots in Borussia Dortmund’s disappointing Bundesliga season. The young Dutchman was recently rumoured to be a potential replacement for Alphonso Davies at FC Bayern. Apparently, BVB have not yet given up hope of signing the left-back permanently.

Now that he has become a permanent fixture at Borussia Dortmund, Maatsen’s father, Edward Maatsen, has confirmed that his son may stay at BVB for longer: „Yes, we are working on staying here. Things have not been going well at Chelsea since the change of ownership,“ he told Voetbal International. He added: „We are happy at BVB, it’s a good place for us.“

Bayern see Maatsen as a possible replacement for Alphonso Davies should he leave the club. The Canadian has been repeatedly linked with Real Madrid. Maatsen, who is still under contract with Chelsea until 2026, has an exit clause of just under €40 million.

Maatsen scores with versatility

Despite the price, which is significantly higher than his current market value, the transfer could be an interesting option for the German record champions, particularly in view of the young Dutchman’s flexibility.

In addition to the left-back position, he can also play in left midfield and as a left winger. In the current season, the 22-year-old has played 34 games for Dortmund, scoring two goals and setting up two others.
