EURO 2024 kicks off in Germany in less than two months. After the DFB team finally managed to impress again in the last two games following a poor international year in 2023, euphoria is now also rising for the upcoming home tournament. Bayern and DFB star Thomas Müller is hoping for a repeat of the summer fairytale from 2006.

In an interview with GQ, Müller was asked whether he believes that the euphoria of the summer fairytale in 2006 could be repeated at the upcoming European Championship on home soil. The Bayern icon replied: „Definitely. I think the potential is there. I also believe that because of everything that has happened in recent years, from corona to the various political problems in the world, there is a great need to be really happy again.“

„It’s not the easiest of times at the moment, and even more so an event like this can trigger something that gets everyone excited. For it to be like 2006 again, our key moments have to be right, with wins in close games against good opponents,“ the 34-year-old continued. According to Müller, it will take a bit of luck as well as the team’s own performance to get back to the experience of the 2006 home World Cup.

Euphoria about home European Championships on the rise

After a long period of drought during the last international break, the DFB team gave German fans renewed hope of a summer fairytale. Julian Nagelsmann’s team defeated both France (2:0) and the Netherlands (2:1) and showed a clear improvement in performance compared to the previous games.

The European Championship on home soil starts on 14 June, with the final taking place on 14 July. The DFB team will face Scotland in their first match. This will be Thomas Müller’s seventh major tournament with the German national team.
