National coach Julian Nagelsmann has recently been increasingly linked with a return to the German record champions. However, the 36-year-old is being heavily courted. This is also confirmed by DFB sports director Rudi Völler.

Now that preferred candidate Xabi Alonso has announced that he will remain in Leverkusen, FC Bayern’s management must look around for alternatives. According to recent media reports, Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi is currently the favourite to succeed Thomas Tuchel.

However, a return of Julian Nagelsmann, who was sacked two years ago, is apparently also being discussed at Säbener Straße. His contract with the DFB expires after the upcoming home European Championship.

Rudi Völler has now commented on Nagelsmann’s future. The DFB sports director revealed: „He has many enquiries.“

Nagelsmann has recently been repeatedly linked with FC Barcelona, for example.

DFB aims to extend contract

As Völler emphasised, the DFB will fight for Nagelsmann until the end: „Even before the two successful international matches, we made it clear that we could imagine continuing with him until the next World Cup. That would be our great wish,“ said the 63-year-old.

Nagelsmann knew „of course that we have a good team with which we could also achieve something in the coming years. Coaching a national team is something totally special. It’s the most important team we have in Germany. I think he likes that. That’s important to know.“

As reported by BILD, a Nagelsmann return to FC Bayern is anything but out of the question. This scenario is already being discussed within Bayern. Allegedly, FCB sporting director Max Eberl has even made contact.

Nagelsmann himself is said to be able to imagine a return to Munich. In general, BILD suspects that a return to club football could be more appealing to him than the national coach position. A decision is expected before the start of the European Championships in June.
