The search for the new FCB head coach for the coming season is also in full swing. The name of former coach Julian Nagelsmann is also being bandied about, especially as both sides have not categorically ruled out working together again recently. A comeback would certainly be conceivable for Lothar Matthäus.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann and the DFB team are currently in the hot preparation phase for the home European Championships starting in mid-June. It remains to be seen what the 36-year-old will do after the tournament. However, there should be no shortage of concrete offers from clubs should Nagelsmann decide to take over a club again.

FC Barcelona and Liverpool FC, among others, are rumoured to be interested, while a move to Borussia Dortmund or Newcastle United is apparently already off the table. FCB still have Xabi Alonso at the top of their wish list, but Nagelsmann has also been linked with the Munich club.

Matthäus on Nagelsmann at FCB: „He’s done well“

As a reminder: almost a year ago, the Landsberg native was sacked after almost a year and a half at FCB and replaced by Thomas Tuchel. At the time, his dismissal was apparently not only due to sporting reasons, but also his impact off the pitch. However, some time has passed since then and a new start would be conceivable if both sides were open to it.

He already has a supporter for a return. „I have every confidence in him – including a return to FC Bayern. He’s done well, not very well, but well. He was often left alone at Bayern,“ said record international Lothar Mathäus at a sponsor meeting. Nagelsmann became German champion with Munich in 2022, among other things, and in the following season he led Bayern to the autumn championship and, until his dismissal during the international break in March, confidently reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup and the Champions League.
