FC Bayern is looking for a coach for the coming season and Xabi Alonso is still the top candidate. However, record international Lothar Matthäus is now in favour of another coach: Ralf Rangnick.

Lothar Matthäus has spoken out in favour of Ralf Rangnick with regard to FC Bayern’s search for a coach.

„Wherever he has worked, he has always done a successful job. He has played attractive football, even now with the Austrians, as we saw against Germany,“ enthused Matthäus at a sponsor meeting about the current Austrian national team coach.

The record-breaking international continued: „He favours young players, which is also where FC Bayern wants to go. That is also Max Eberl’s philosophy. Rangnick must be on the list that Eberl has drawn up.“

Matthäus believes that Rangnick would suit FC Bayern not only professionally, but also personally: „At Bayern Munich, you’re not the sole entertainer like at Red Bull Salzburg or Leipzig, where there have also been a few differences. But Ralf Rangnick would be someone I could imagine, if you look at the human side.“

Rangnick failed at Man United

Before his stint in Austria, Rangnick failed at Manchester United. At RB Leipzig, he built up a Bundesliga team as head of sport and initially also as coach for the Red Bull Group. Rangnick’s previous coaching stops include Ulm, Stuttgart, Hanover, Schalke and Hoffenheim.

Matthäus is not the first to bring Rangick into play at Bayern. Commentator legend Marcel Reif had previously identified the 65-year-old as a candidate for the German record champions: „Of course he is a proven football expert who has achieved great things at clubs. Not just: ‚How do we play tomorrow? But also: ‚How do we play the day after tomorrow? He has left his mark on Leipzig, and a big one at that,“ he told BILD.

Reif’s conclusion at the time on a possible future for Rangnick at Bayern: „I don’t think it’s out of the question.“
