The recent decisions by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann not to nominate a number of established international players for the upcoming international matches have caused plenty of discussion. In particular, the decision not to include Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka has surprised many.

The background to the decision not to nominate Goretzka for the upcoming international matches is a planned radical shake-up in the DFB team, as kicker chief reporter Oliver Hartmann reports. After the national team’s disappointing performances in recent international matches, Nagelsmann sees the need to bring a breath of fresh air into the team. „A double-digit number of players who were part of the squad back then are likely to be withdrawn now. There will be a larger number of newcomers and returnees,“ said Hartmann.

Goretzka, who has put in strong performances for Bayern recently, will therefore fall victim to a new strategy. In future, the national coach wants to focus on players „who do not yet have a great history with the national team, but have the momentum on their side.“

This includes Bayern youngster Aleksandar Pavlovic, for example, who has been nominated for the senior national team for the first time.

Despite his impressive performance in the 8-1 win over Mainz 05, Goretzka’s season performance is not considered sufficient. Goretzka scored two goals and set up two others in Bayern’s thumping victory. „But his season is not good and his games for the national team have rarely been appealing in recent years,“ said Hartmann, explaining the national team coach’s decision.

Door not closed for Goretzka

Nagelsmann’s selection for the upcoming matches against France and the Netherlands is seen by many as a clear sign for the upcoming European Championship. Players like Goretzka and BVB defender Mats Hummels, who were previously regarded as pillars of the team, will now have to fight for their position. The decision to do without established stars appears to be a long-term decision by the national coach. Even though the door for a return to the squad is not finally closed due to the club matches still to be played.

The European Championship in Germany starts on 14 June. The German national team will open the tournament against Scotland in Munich’s Allianz Arena. The battle for places in the squad is now entering the final phase.
