Hamann: „De Ligt must be Bayern’s chief of defence!“

Matthijs De Ligt’s form is currently on a steep upward curve. After the Dutchman had previously hardly featured due to several injuries, he has formed a reliable defensive duo with Eric Dier in recent games. From Dietmar Hamann’s point of view, the 24-year-old is Bayern’s chief defender.

In the current season, however, the 24-year-old has repeatedly fluctuated between the starting eleven, the substitutes‘ bench and the stands. Sometimes he has been ruled out due to injury, sometimes Thomas Tuchel has preferred Dayot Upamecano or new signings Minjae Kim and Eric Dier. In the meantime, reports made the rounds that Tuchel was unhappy with De Ligt’s qualities in the build-up play.

In recent weeks, however, De Ligt has got into his stride and was particularly impressive in the Champions League against Lazio Roma. His link-up play with Eric Dier in particular has worked exceptionally well of late.

„De Ligt is someone who leads a defence“

According to Sky pundit Dietmar Hamann, it is now time to finally declare De Ligt the clear leader of Bayern’s defence. Because he is ideally suited to this role, explained the 50-year-old: „De Ligt is someone who leads a defence. You need that, otherwise you won’t be able to win the big titles.“

Hamann emphasised that it is particularly important in the centre of defence to give instructions to his team-mates. „The voice is the twelfth man. You need two or three speakers on the pitch. And it’s even more important in the centre. In de Ligt, they have someone who, in my opinion, has to be the leader of the defence. You have to see who plays alongside him,“ said the former international.

The lack of organisation has been noticeable in the current season: „I didn’t understand why he played almost no role in the previous round. You have four centre-backs, none of whom speak the language. De Ligt is probably the best. You need someone who can organise,“ said the TV pundit after FC Bayern’s 8-1 win over 1. FSV Mainz 05.
