Midfield or right-back? Eberl solves Kimmich riddle in the DFB team

Thomas Tuchel consistently deploys Joshua Kimmich at right-back in Bayern’s final sprint of the season. This will not change for the time being. As sporting director Max Eberl has now revealed, the FCB star will also line up at right-back for the DFB team at the upcoming European Football Championship.

Where will Joshua Kimmich play in the German national team at Euro 2024? This question has been the subject of heated debate for some time now. Kimmich once celebrated his breakthrough on the right flank at FC Bayern and in the DFB team. Ex-Bayern coach Niko Kovac later moved him to (defensive) midfield, and Kimmich has since established himself there both in Munich and in the national team.

Due to the return of Toni Kroos to the DFB squad and the fact that captain Ilkay Gündogan is set under Julian Nagelsmann, there are many indications that Kimmich will have to switch to the unloved right-back position in future.

„Advantageous for German football“

At the end of last year, Nagelsmann emphasised that he had not yet made a final decision as to whether Kimmich would play at right-back in the back four or in midfield at the EURO.

According to Max Eberl, however, there is now clarity: „He will also play at right-back at the European Championship, so it is also beneficial for German football to a certain extent that he can now play there,“ he revealed in an interview with Sky before Munich’s Bundesliga match against Mainz yesterday.

Eberl did not want to comment on what will happen with Kimmich at the German record champions next summer. According to his own statements, there have not yet been any talks between him and the 29-year-old. However, this should take place soon. Eberl also referred to the new Bayern coach. He will also play a decisive role in the Kimmich case at FC Bayern.
