After a disappointing loss against Villareal in the Champions League quarterfinals, Bayern Munich won three important points in the Bavarian derby. The performance was not outstanding, a Robert Lewandowski penalty sealed the win.
Bayern had to suffer yet in another game following the defeat against Villareal. The team will be playing once again on Tuesday. Though there were hopes that the Bavarians would show some signs of waking up, the performance against Augsburg did not show a lot of improvements, except for scoring one goal.
Here are the most important statements from the Bavarian derby
Leon Goretzka: „We didn’t play a good first half. The intensity was missing. It was an uncomfortable opponent and we didn’t have the intensity in the first half to go for the second ball. […] Every year it depends on this stage of the season, but that’s exactly the phase that the fans want to see. We’re really looking forward to it.“
… on the Tuesday game: „You can’t compare it, they are two different games. The place will be on fire here on Tuesday and we will show a game that is Bayern-like.”
Julian Nagelsmann: „The first half, to put it short, wasn’t good. I think the twenty minutes after the break were very good, then we had a slump and we did well in the last ten minutes. We’re also in a phase of the season when you don’t have to shine, you have to win. Today was a game that we just had to win. We made very good substitutions, Sabitzer and King [Coman] won us the game through their courage after they came in. Sabitzer in particular played a very good game.“
… on improvements vs Villareal: „In percent? Compared to today about 60-70 percent. If there is a team that has the international experience, that is Bayern Munich“
Robert Lewandowski: „It was an important win and an important penalty. Overall it was good preparation for the second leg against Villarreal. We want to build on the dynamic second half on Tuesday. It’s a completely different feeling when the stadium is full.“
Manuel Neuer: „We didn’t start quite as well. The pace was a bit lacking in the first half. We did better after the break, there was more momentum and chances to score. In the end we deservedly won 1-0. It was important that we kept the clean sheet and won.“
