Florian Wirtz and FC Bayern—this topic has been on Munich’s mind for years. Even after his move to Liverpool FC, speculation about a possible future with the German record champions hasn’t completely died down. For Lothar Matthäus, however, one thing is clear: a transfer of the German national team player to Munich makes little sense at the moment.
In his latest Sky column, the former Bayern captain addressed Wirtz’s current situation on the field. He also addressed the question of whether a return to the Bundesliga—and specifically a move to FC Bayern—would be a realistic option.
Matthäus sees no room for that at the moment. In his view, the main reason is the enormous quality and depth of Munich’s offense.
Matthäus: “I wouldn’t know where to fit Wirtz in right now.”
Bayern already has three absolute key players on offense in Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz. Added to that are Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, who also possess great individual qualities.
New signing Ismael Saibari also expands the options available to coach Vincent Kompany.
For Matthäus, this raises the question of what role Wirtz could possibly play in this star-studded squad. “When I look at Munich’s offense: Kane, Olise, and Díaz are starters; Musiala and Gnabry are top-tier players. The club wants to extend Kane and Olise’s contracts; the others are under long-term deals; and Saibari is a new addition,” explained the all-time leading German international.
His conclusion is correspondingly clear. “I wouldn’t know where to fit Wirtz in right now, and with the best will in the world, I don’t see any short-term possibility of bringing him to FC Bayern.”
With that, Matthäus clearly rules out a near-term move by the former Leverkusen player to Säbener Straße.
Bayern is counting on Olise and Musiala for the long term

In fact, the Munich club has systematically strengthened its offense in recent years and made several key personnel decisions.
Michael Olise, in particular, has developed into one of Europe’s standout attacking players since his move to Munich. Bayern would like to extend the Frenchman’s contract, which runs through 2029, ahead of schedule.
The record champions are also aiming for a long-term partnership with Harry Kane.
With Jamal Musiala, the squad also includes another German national team player who can be deployed in positions similar to Wirtz’s.
An additional transfer of this magnitude would therefore not only require significant financial resources but also raise new questions regarding the distribution of roles on the field.
Matthäus believes the Munich team is simply too well-positioned offensively to need to sign another superstar in the short term.
Matthäus mentions other options for Wirtz
Should Wirtz’s situation at Liverpool FC not improve, Matthäus considers a club transfer a possibility in principle. “If he continues to face criticism in Liverpool and isn’t able to show his passion for the game there, then at some point all parties will have to sit down together and perhaps find a solution,” explained the 65-year-old.
He mentioned clubs from Spain as well as Chelsea FC as potential suitors. Ironically, the London club is currently coached by Xabi Alonso—the very same coach under whom Wirtz celebrated his greatest successes to date at Bayer Leverkusen.
Whether he will actually leave Liverpool early remains to be seen.
In any case, Matthäus sees no immediate need for Bayern Munich to take action. In his view, the record champions already have such a strong attacking lineup that even an exceptional player like Wirtz would hardly find a spot there at the moment.
