Jonas Urbig made his debut for the German senior national team against Serbia. Before the game, two of his Bayern teammates reached out to him.
Jonas Urbig made his debut in goal for the German national team in their 2-0 victory over Serbia. The 23-year-old appeared composed and calm for much of the match—exactly as we’ve come to know him from FC Bayern.
After the match, Urbig was asked on ZDF whether the special circumstances surrounding his first senior international match had made him nervous: “It’s a bit different because of the national anthem. They don’t have that in the Bundesliga, but I’m actually relatively calm and relaxed before the game.”
Even during the match, he tried to block out the significance of the evening: “While you’re playing, you don’t really think about it that much—it’s all about delivering your best performance on the field. And all the other issues surrounding it—they don’t have any place there.”
Neuer and Ulreich weigh in ahead of the game
Urbig was particularly pleased to receive messages from Munich. Even before his debut, Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich reached out to him: “Yes, Manuel and Ulle texted me before the game, wishing me the best of luck and saying they were really happy that I got to make my debut—I was really happy to hear from them.”

For Urbig, Neuer and Ulreich are also important role models in daily training. When asked what he’d learned from the two of them, the Bayern goalkeeper highlighted one thing above all: “Belief in one’s own abilities and that constant drive to move forward and improve.”
His debut went accordingly calmly and confidently. Germany controlled the match for long stretches and allowed very little defensively, so Urbig was rarely seriously tested.
For the Bayern goalkeeper, it was nonetheless a special evening. With his first appearance for the senior national team, Urbig took another important step in his development—and in the process, he clearly felt the full support of his fellow goalkeepers from Munich.
