Like so many FC Bayern players, Harry Kane is currently with the national team. Playing for England on Saturday against Spain, he missed an unusual shot.
With the score at 2-1 in favor of the Three Lions, the English team was awarded a penalty kick. And, of course, Kane didn’t want to pass up the chance to take it.
The Bayern striker’s record from the spot is phenomenal—he rarely misses such opportunities. But on this Saturday evening, things turned out differently: he hit the crossbar and immediately looked down at the field.
Kane explains his missed penalty kick
The replay immediately showed why Kane missed the penalty kick. The striker slipped as he took the shot, causing him to lose his balance. The result was a double touch—Kane kicked the ball over his own standing leg.
After the game, the Bayern striker explained what had happened: “It was unfortunate to slip at that moment—it happens sometimes. I tried to put a lot of power into it, and my left foot just gave way. Obviously, I hit the ball twice.”
He continued: “That’s the life of a soccer player, the life of a striker. Things didn’t go according to my plan in the second half.” Earlier, however, Kane had played a part in putting the English team ahead in the first place. The forward scored the 2–1 goal with a header, though the ball was deflected by Marc Cucurella before it flew into the net.
In the end, the Nations League opener didn’t go well; England lost 2–3. Still, when it comes to a contract extension, FC Bayern and the striker are getting closer and closer to an agreement. And the record champions are even making an exception in the negotiations by offering Kane a long-term contract. It looks as though it will be signed shortly, with an official announcement to follow.
