Javi Fernández has developed into an absolute key player at 1. FC Nürnberg in recent months. Now the Franconians want to extend his loan with FC Bayern – but the record champions are apparently deliberately keeping all their options open
No player has impressed more at the club in recent weeks than the 19-year-old Spaniard. Particularly noteworthy: with Fernández on the pitch, Nuremberg remained unbeaten in the entire second half of the season
The Franconians‘ interest in keeping the midfield jewel beyond the summer is correspondingly high, with FCN sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou already confirming that an extension of the loan until 2027 is to be concluded in the near future
Bayern have a withdrawal clause
However, the situation is not quite that simple
According to information from BILD, FC Bayern can still stop the loan deal that has already been worked out until June 15 – provided this is done in consultation with Fernández and his management
This means that the Munich club will retain full control over the midfielder’s future
A definitive stay in Nuremberg is therefore by no means a done deal
However, there has been much to suggest that Fernández will stay at the club for another season. At the end of April, Fernández was still publicly raving about the city, the club and the „positively crazy fans“. Internally, nothing is said to have changed
The Spaniard feels at home in Nuremberg and particularly appreciates the trust he has received there after his long injury break
Bad luck with injuries slowed down Bayern jewel

The fact that Fernández ended up in Nuremberg at all was largely due to his difficult year before
The former Atlético Madrid player was regarded as one of Spain’s biggest talents when he moved to FC Bayern in 2023 – he was even sometimes mentioned in the same breath as Barça super talent Lamine Yamal
However, several serious injuries, including ankle problems and meniscus damage, set his development back massively
Fernández only found his rhythm again at 1. FC Nürnberg – where he immediately impressed
Fernández is currently on vacation and apparently wants to take his time to analyze his future, which may also play a role in how competitive the Nuremberg squad will be for the coming season
An extension would send out an enormous signal to the club, as Fernández has long been regarded internally as a potential difference-maker and the face of the new team
FC Bayern, on the other hand, seem to want to keep all options open and the Spaniard is still highly rated internally
Whether Fernández will actually play another season in Nuremberg or whether Bayern will change their plans at short notice will probably only be decided in the coming weeks.
