Luis Diaz delivers a historic performance against PSG, but Franck Ribéry’s record remains unmatched
The result hurts, the numbers impress: In the spectacular 4:5 in the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Diaz was FC Bayern’s most conspicuous attacking player – and set historic figures in the process
According to Opta data, the Colombian scored a total of 16 shots from the penalty area – a personal best in the Champions League and also the highest figure of any player on the pitch, a mark that has rarely been achieved in the history of the top flight
Since data recording began in the 2003/04 season, only two players have surpassed this figure in a semi-final or final. Lamine Yamal scored 17 penalties twice in 2025, while Bayern legend Franck Ribéry even recorded 18 in the 2018 semi-final first leg against Real Madrid
Ribéry thus remains unrivaled – at least in this category
Diaz also dominates in tackles
But Diaz not only set standards in the penalty area. The attacking player also impressed across the board in direct duels. With 12 duels won, he also set a personal best. In a total of 15 duels, this results in a strong success rate of 80 per cent
Most of these actions took place in the opponent’s half. Diaz consistently looked for the way forward and was a constant threat to the PSG defense
His performance in Paris matches the winger’s current form. Diaz scored in his sixth Champions League game in a row and was directly involved in seven goals. In total, he has scored seven goals in the top flight, making him one of Bayern’s most effective players behind Harry Kane

The 29-year-old has also underlined his importance to the team in all competitions: with 26 goals and 17 assists, he is one of the most prolific attacking players in Europe
Despite the defeat, the realization remains: Luis Diaz is playing at the absolute top level – even if he hasn’t quite been able to match Franck Ribéry’s historic record.
