Important personnel decisions are due to be made at FC Bayern in the coming months. While the future of CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sporting director Christoph Freund seems relatively clear, the future of sporting director Max Eberl is apparently the subject of intense internal debate
As reported by Sport BILD, a contract extension for the 52-year-old is by no means certain at present
The most recent supervisory board meeting of FC Bayern took place at the end of February, but concrete talks about the contracts of Jan-Christian Dreesen and Max Eberl, which both run until June 30, 2027, were not yet on the agenda
What is clear, however, is that the club will have to address the future of its management team in the coming season at the latest, which is also when the contract of sporting director Christoph Freund expires
According to the report, the chances of a contract extension for Eberl are currently around 50:50. One of the reasons for this is a legal regulation in stock corporation law, according to which management contracts can generally only be extended one year before they expire
Nevertheless, Eberl is apparently already the subject of intense internal discussion
Sporting record speaks for Eberl

In sporting terms, the former Gladbach manager’s record so far has been very positive. FC Bayern is playing a strong season and is on course for the title
The record champions are also in the DFB Cup semi-finals and have one foot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League following their 6-1 win over Atalanta Bergamo
Several of the sporting director’s personnel decisions are also viewed positively internally, with the appointment of Vincent Kompany as head coach in particular now considered a success after the turbulent period under Thomas Tuchel came to an end
Eberl was also able to sign two key players from the Premier League, Michael Olise and Luis Díaz, and the transfer of Jonathan Tah, which was initially controversial internally, is now also seen as the right decision
Apparent reservations internally
Despite the sporting development, there are said to still be reservations about Eberl within the club’s management. According to Sport BILD, a key issue is the relationship of trust between the sporting director and parts of Bayern’s top management. FCB are said to have criticised internally that the supervisory board was sometimes only involved in major decisions at a relatively late stage. This has caused resentment, particularly in the case of transfers or contracts worth millions
The report cites the sale of Kingsley Coman as an example. According to the report, Eberl had already reached an agreement with Al-Nassr for a transfer fee of around 25 million euros. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen is said to have subsequently renegotiated again, which ultimately increased the transfer fee to around 30 million euros
Dreesen and Freund have better prospects

While Eberl’s future currently seems open, Jan-Christian Dreesen’s prospects are considered much clearer. The supervisory board is said to be very satisfied with the work of the CEO
Christoph Freund also appears to enjoy a high level of trust internally. His contract also runs until 2027, although in his case it is not the supervisory board but the management board that decides on a possible extension
According to Sport BILD, the Austrian has a very good chance of securing a new contract, with his work with the professional team and at the Bayern Campus in particular being viewed positively internally
However, it remains to be seen when a final decision on the future of the management team will be made. According to the report, the topic could be raised for the first time at a supervisory board meeting in May before it becomes more concrete in the summer
One thing is already certain: while FC Bayern is apparently planning for the long term with Dreesen and Freund, the future of Max Eberl remains an open personnel matter. A surprise therefore does not seem out of the question.
