Bouna Sarr has gone through an extremely difficult phase. He hardly played a role at FC Bayern, serious injuries stopped him time and again. Now the 34-year-old has shown signs of sporting life again for the first time.
His last few years in soccer were anything but straightforward. In Munich, he was mostly just a reserve, then tore his cruciate ligament in the winter of 2023, after which his contract expired in 2024. Sarr was then without a club for a long time until he was at least able to get some competitive minutes again.
The right-back played for FC Metz against Paris, marking his first competitive match since 11 November 2023, when he was still in an FC Bayern shirt against Heidenheim. 2 years and 102 days later, he has now made his comeback to professional soccer.
Sarr thought about ending his career

Sarr was denied his sporting breakthrough in Munich. Signed in 2020 for around eight million euros, the Senegalese only made 33 appearances and played 1,293 minutes in four years. Injuries repeatedly slowed him down, including a protracted patellar tendon problem and knee surgery, which also cost him the World Cup in Qatar.
The most serious setback followed in November 2023 with a cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee. After months of rehab, his chapter with the German record champions ended without him being able to play again. In October 2025, the portal Sportsboom even reported that Sarr was seriously considering ending his career after his „injury hell“.
The 34-year-old has now been back under contract with FC Metz since 2 February 2026. His brief appearance against Paris was his first competitive match on the pitch in over two years – a small but significant sign after a long period of suffering.
