How is FC Bayern planning the upcoming summer transfer window? Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has provided some insight
FC Bayern seem to have calmed down in defence for the time being. Following Dayot Upamecano’s contract extension until 2030, the Munich club have officially declared their central defence complete. But does that automatically mean that names like Yann Aurel Bisseck, Nico Schlotterbeck or Luka Vuskovic will no longer play a role? Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has now commented on this
When asked whether FC Bayern would first have to make room in the squad before looking at potential candidates again, Eberl clarified in an interview with SPORT1: „We have reached the point where we are not driven in terms of squad planning. We can take our time to decide what happens next. Of course, we are still keeping an eye on the market. We will certainly never block an option that would be good for FC Bayern.“
The 50-year-old is thus signalling that even if there is currently no acute need for action, those responsible are keeping a close eye on developments. However, there are no plans for a quick fix. Instead, the aim is to act strategically and with foresight
Early planning instead of a last-minute rush
Eberl also emphasized that he is generally a proponent of early squad planning. „I am also someone who completes his squad planning early. I managed to do that in Mönchengladbach, in Leipzig and incidentally also here at FC Bayern. Everything was done by mid-July, before the start of preparations,“ he explained
Last summer showed that late moves can still happen. After Kingsley Coman asked for his release and was eventually granted it, Bayern had to react at short notice. „When Kingsley Coman then asked for his release, which we eventually granted him, we had to fight for Nicolas Jackson until the last day. That wasn’t ideal, but it can happen,“ said Eberl in retrospect. The extension with Upamecano means they can now „go into the summer transfer phase with a clear plan“
No more „hungry“ purchases necessary
The sporting director believes it is particularly important not to have to act under pressure on the transfer market. „It’s always bad if you have to go shopping when you’re hungry,“ Eberl made clear. The latest extensions and signings have created a more comfortable starting position
„With the signings and extensions we now have under our belt, we can relax and look around. We are always interested in strengthening the squad in certain areas, but we no longer have the pressure. We can make targeted and strategic purchases,“ said Eberl.
