The next personnel decision with a signal effect is already casting its shadow ahead at FC Bayern. Max Eberl’s contract expires in the summer of 2027 – and this raises the question of what will happen to the sporting director in the long term. Uli Hoeneß has now clearly positioned himself in an interview with BILD
The honorary president made it clear that no decision can be made for the time being. „The law on shares stipulates that we are not allowed to make a decision before 1 July – i.e. one year before the end of the contract. We will make a decision in July or August, after the end of the transfer period,“ explained Hoeneß
This procedure is legally prescribed and also applies to CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, whose contract also runs until June 30, 2027
Hoeneß is thus not contradicting Eberl’s recent statements, who had recently publicly emphasised that no talks about an extension had taken place to date. The 52-year-old expressed his openness and willingness to talk should the club approach him. It is precisely this scenario that now appears to be clearly timed: a decision is realistic for next summer at the earliest
Hoeneß emphasizes „very good relationship“

Hoeneß was also clear on a personal level. After attesting to Eberl’s „sensitivity“ last summer, he now made it clear: „We have a very good, open relationship. But that doesn’t mean you can’t say something critical.“
The 74-year-old underlined the culture of discussion at the record champions, saying that FC Bayern has always distinguished itself by having honest and tough internal debates. At the same time, he praised the development of the sporting management. „The entire sporting management with Max, Christoph Freund and Vincent Kompany has developed well in recent months. It works.“
He also took a dig at the past: „It didn’t work at all with Thomas Tuchel before.“
The message is clear: Eberl is currently not up for discussion and enjoys internal support – however, a contract extension is tied to the formal framework and will only be assessed in concrete terms after the 2026 transfer window
Until then, the sporting director’s motto is: deliver – and that is exactly what FC Bayern seems to be focusing on at the moment.
