The goalkeeping situation at FC Bayern remains one of the most exciting topics of the coming months. While Manuel Neuer remains the clear number one, his possible career plan beyond 2026 is increasingly coming into focus – and with it the question of who could take over his place in the long term. Ahead of the clash with VfB Stuttgart, sporting director Christoph Freund has now commented in more detail for the first time on the future of Alexander Nübel, who is currently shining as a top performer at VfB
Alexander Nübel faces his home club again this afternoon – and it could be one of the most symbolic duels of his career to date. The 29-year-old has played an outstanding role at VfB Stuttgart since the summer of 2023, has cemented himself in the team and is one of the strongest goalkeepers in the Bundesliga. The question of whether he has a real future at FC Bayern after his loan is therefore more pressing than ever.
Sporting director Christoph Freund was asked about thisat the press conference before the southern clash and his answer was remarkably positive: „He is our goalkeeper, is playing a good season and has really developed once again. He is one of the best goalkeepers in Germany. We are happy that we are very well positioned for the time after Manuel Neuer.“
Freund is clearly hinting that Nübel could play an important role in the internal plan for the future – but there is no definitive clarity.
Stuttgart would like to keep Nübel – much remains open
While Bayern are keeping an eye on the development of their loan keeper, Stuttgart are hoping that he might stay beyond the end of the season. VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth recently explained on Sky that no scenario can be ruled out: „He doesn’t have any watertight plans yet and Bayern Munich don’t have a clear goalkeeping constellation yet either, so you can’t rule anything out.“
Wohlgemuth praised Nübel in the highest terms: He is „an absolutely undisputed number one“, is part of the team council and is an „important cornerstone“ of the team. The fact that the Swabians have already loaned out a great talent in Dennis Seimen also underlines how much they rely on Nübel.
Neuer as a key figure – several Bayern options for the future
However, Manuel Neuer remains the decisive variable in the entire goalkeeping construct. The FC Bayern captain has not yet decided whether he will continue his career beyond the summer. As long as there is no clarity on this, it will not be possible to definitively plan Munich’s goalkeeping future.
With Jonas Urbig, who has attracted impressive attention since his signing, and Daniel Peretz, currently on loan to Hamburger SV, the record champions have several options at their disposal. Nübel is one of them.
